How To Decorate & Style Bookshelves

Earlier this week I did a little reveal of our living room bookshelves. I needed to prove to you guys that I have in fact decorated at least one thing outside of my room. Today I thought I would show you guys how I went about styling the shelves.

How To Style Bookshelves

Just as a refresher, here’s what the shelves look like now. You can see them in their prior barren glory here.

How To Style Bookshelves

Now, I am by no means a professional decorator and for all I know I could have broken several cardinal rules when it comes to accessorizing bookshelves. But, I’ll share with you how I went about styling them and share a few tips that worked for me.

I’ll start with the right hand side of the built in bookshelves first.

How to Style BookshelvesThe main rule or tip I used when trying to figure out where to place things was the rule of triangles. Basically that means you place like objects in a triangle pattern. This helps to balance your shelves and it’s also what’s the most visually appealing.

Here’s an example.

How To Style BookshelvesIf you follow the coral arrows, you can see that all of my books {with the exception of the stack in the upper right corner} follow a triangle pattern. Also, since I had so many, I tried to place them in a variety of different ways. I stacked them both horizontally and vertically and also leaned some of the books.

How To Style BookshelvesI also added a few {faux} plants to the shelves. If you follow the gray arrows, you can see that those are also placed along a triangle or diagonal pattern.

I think plants, even if they are fake, help to add life to any space.

How To Style BookshelvesI also used a few over-sized or large items on the shelves {the fan, coke crate and wire basket}. Once again, if you follow the green arrows, I also placed those along the triangle pattern {are you beginning to notice a trend?}.

I mentioned this before, but it really did take me several weeks to get the shelves like I wanted them. I know some people can throw stuff together all at once and it absolutely looks amazing. For me though, I really had to take some time to live with them for a bit, and then adjust or tweak after deciding I didn’t like where something was.

I by no means set out to have everything perfectly placed along the triangle pattern. But it’s true, it really is the most visually appealing. Everything just ended up fitting into that rule once I stepped back and was happy with how they looked.

How To Style BookshelvesThe left hand side of built in bookshelves doesn’t have as many accessories since the bulk of it is taken up by our tv.

For additional styling tips, both SAS Interiors and Home Stories A to Z have great posts on how to achieve well styled bookshelves.

Do you use the rule of triangles when you are decorating? Other than the rule of triangles, what’s your one go to trick when styling your bookshelves?

I’ll be back Monday with a roundup of where I got all the accessories I used to fill my shelves.

Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!

Living Room Update:: Styled Bookshelves

I’ve been showing you guys the progress I’ve been making on my room when it comes to decorating. You may be starting to wonder if I’ve touched anything else in the house besides my room at this point?

Well, the answer is yes. I haven’t done all that much, but one thing I’ve finally finished for the most part is our bookshelves in our living room.

Here’s what the room looked like before we moved in.

And here’s what the bookshelves look like now.

Styled Bookshelves

I plan to show you guys how I went about styling them in another post and also let you know where I got some of the items I put on the shelves. But for now, I’ll just share some pictures with you {sorry, it’s definitely picture overload}.

We’ll start with the left hand side.

It took me a while to get them like I wanted. I would put things in places and let it stay that way for a few days before I decided whether I liked it there or not. My roommates would make fun of me because they would come in the room and I would have moved things around again for the 15th time. What can I say, I like to edit/tweak. :)

I’ll be back later this week with more details on the bookshelves and how they came to be.

As a sidenote, I took all these pictures not only with my new tri-pod but I also took them using full manual mode! I think I’m finally getting the hang of it. Yay!

So what do you think? Are you a tweaker? Do you sit with a decorating decision for a few days before you decide whether you’re happy with it?

Be sure to also check out my post on how I went about styling the shelves here and where I got all the accessories here.

Styling Bookcases

I love built-in bookshelves and just bookshelves in general. They are a great way to add storage but also add character to the overall room.
Despite the fact that I love them, my problem has always been how to display objects and books on them well. Currently in my apartment, I have two built-in bookshelves. I love that the apartment came with these, but I’m not fully utilizing them for their potential.
I know for me when we moved in, I just wanted to get everyting out of boxes and up on shelves/walls as quickly as possible so that it felt like home. As a result, these two shelves in particular have an assortment of books and accessories thrown on them.

I’ve seen lots of styled bookshelves and tips on how to style them around blog land so I thought I would compile them for you and for me.

Cristin from Simplified Bee says the first step is to begin with a clean start. Take everything off your shelves and essentially start over. House Beautiful also suggests backing the shelves with colored paper or painting the back a contrasting color which will help your books and objects stand out.

Sherry from Young House Love suggests to begin by adding your biggest items first. If you have books,  group them together and stack them in varying patterns. You can also group them by color or size and stack them both horizontally and vertically. If you don’t already have a ton of books, you can find lots of old vintage books at thrift stores.

Another cute idea for big items is to add empty frames like the below. I love how they have layered items in front of the frames and also layered the frames themselves.

Continue adding the rest of your objects like vases, candles, picture frames, mementos, etc and add your smallest objects last. Always keep in mind, it is more visually appealing to group things together in odd numbers.

I think I have a tendency to focus too much on things matching. Everything doesn’t have to match. The key is for everything to feel cohesive in some way and have the same essence. Take for example these letters on this bookcase.

They are all different, but fit together very beautifully.

If you’re daring, instead of just styling the inside of the shelves, hang things on the outside as well.

Once you’ve put everything together, take a step back and see if you like how everything looks.

I love the recent interview with Emily Henderson that was featured on Censational Girl. Emily won HGTV’s Design Star recently and now has her own show called Secret’s of a Stylist. When Emily is trying to edit the styling she’s done, she takes a picture with her phone and then stares at the picture. She looks at the image as if it’s a magazine page and trys to determine what might need editing. Such a good idea! Be sure to check out the full interview for other design tips.

This bookshelf is definitely magazine worthy.

Hopefully some of this was helpful to you. These images inspire me to tackle my own bookshelves.

Do you have any tips for styling bookshelves or any experience of your own? Would love to hear from you!
