Josh Wilson Video Set Design

It’s been a while since I blogged about a set design. With my new job I won’t be doing any set design, so unfortunately I won’t really be blogging about those anymore. But, before I left Nashville, I did work on a set that I haven’t blogged about yet. Thought I would show it to you guys today.

I apologize in advance, these pictures are terrible. That’s because A) My camera battery died so I had to use my phone for most and B) things were crazy at work and I was trying to move a mile a minute so taking great pictures wasn’t my top priority.

The set I worked on was for Josh Wilson. Here’s a shot I took with my phone while he was actually filming in front of it.

This was probably one of the most simple sets I ever worked on. But, I had a really hard time trying to figure out what to do for it. I didn’t have the time to come up with something elaborate, so I knew it needed to be really simple. So, in the end I tried to create a set that represented the overall theme and art from his single artwork {below}.

Since his cover had lots of pops of color in it and it looked similar to color blocking, I took that theme and ran with it {hence the hanging color blocked artwork in the back}. I’ll show you more pictures from the actual set, but first I wanted to show you how I made the hanging artwork.

I just bought four pieces of plain white foam board.

JoAnns had some large fun colorful vinyl sheets. I decided to buy a few different colors but try to keep a similar color palette (not go completely crazy with color). From laying the sheets out at JoAnns, I knew I needed three vinyl sheets per board, so I picked out two different sets of colors and bought two sets each.

Before I peeled and stuck anything, I laid out the vinyl on the boards.

Then you literally just peel and stick {I realize this isn’t rocket science but humor me for a bit}. I used a credit card to smooth the vinyl out as it went on the board to avoid bubbles {although a few bubbles snuck in there which is ok}.

Whatever excess that was hanging off the ends I just cut and wrapped onto the back of the board. {P.S. A big thanks to Sarah from my previous job for being my project model while I took pictures and for helping me with this project too}.

And before I hung them up, I laid them out on the floor first to see how I wanted them to hang. I ended up splitting each same color board up so they hung every other {even though the boards are laid out with two of the same pattern next to each other}.

So now, let’s go back to the set and the process of how that actually came together once the artwork was done. Below is a before. Basically just hung the black draping and lights similar to the Colton Dixon set and Britt Nicole set.

To hang the boards, I just lightly tapped a nail into the top corners of the board just to get a small enough hole.

To actually hang, I used fishing line and threaded the fishing line into the holes in each corner.

Here’s an up close look at one of the boards hanging. {Again, seriously these pictures are totally awful. If you aren’t already judging me for them, I certainly am judging myself.}

So here are all four boards hanging without any of the lights on. I hung two horizontal and two vertical. {And yes, one of the boards is crooked, but have no fear it was fixed before anything was filmed}.

We added some backlighting in the back and here is the set with those lights and the strand of lights above on.

One of the videos they recorded on this set is now up on Youtube. You can see what the finished product looked like on camera below.

What do you think? Still fun, but simple right?

I really loved getting the chance to design sets over the last few years. Hopefully I’ll get the chance to design another set again at some point in the future.

Hope you have an inspired weekend!

Colton Dixon Christmas Video Set

I showed you the Britt Nicole Christmas video set I worked on last week. Today I thought I would skip WordPress Wednesday once more to show you another Christmas video set I worked on. This time for Colton Dixon.

{Warning: these pictures aren’t great. My camera battery died and all I had was my iPhone.}

This set did double duty. We filmed both a Christmas video and non Christmas acoustic videos.

Colton Dixon Video Set

For this set I used the same black draping that I used for a previous set and the same strands of lights.

I hung a few pendant lights from the ceiling as well.

Colton Dixon Video Set 2

We rented a baby grand piano {which actually is a shell, which I’ll show you a close up of it in a bit} and I added a few battery operated candles on top.

Here’s what it looked like sans Christmas decor.

Colton Dixon Video Set 3

To make it look Christmas-y, I added a few of the Christmas decorations I used for the other Christmas set.

Christmas Video Set 4

Recognize these pop-up trees?

I just plopped them down around the piano.

I also hung the silver garland on the piano.

I put a few of the ‘faux’ packages that I wrapped on the piano as well. Recognize those pinecones on the packages? Yep, used the same ones on my packages this year.

I got the pendant lights from World Market. I loved the industrial/distressed finish they had.

The candles also came from World Market. They are made from real wax and the packaging said they gave off a more ‘real’ candle glow. I’m not sure they really did. They still looked a little too orange-y for me. But, with all the back lighting and other lights, on camera they didn’t appear orange which was good.

I mentioned that the baby grand piano was actually a shell. Basically that means they have gutted the piano and you just put a keyboard in it. So it appears like a baby grand, but it’s a lot lighter without the ‘guts’ for renting. Pretty neat. The piano looked great on camera.

Here’s the finished video with Colton’s version of “Jingle Bells.”

What do you think? Which Christmas set do you prefer?

My set designing at work has come to an end though. Today is actually my last day at my current job. I’ve loved getting the opportunity to stretch my creativity and design abilities with these sets at work. I will miss everyone that I’ve had the opportunity to work with over the last 4+ years and will always cherish my time from this past season. On to a new season and a new adventure in South Carolina!

Britt Nicole Christmas Video Set

Taking a break from WordPress Wednesday today and instead showing you something I worked on recently.

A few weeks ago I worked on three different video sets for three different video shoots. One of those was a Christmas set for Britt Nicole.

Britt Nicole Christmas Video Set

I didn’t have a ton of time to prepare beforehand, but I did manage to take a little trip to Tar-jay and scour their Christmas section. And the above is what I came up with.

Here’s what it looked like before. It was basically three large frames that I then draped with white fabric.

Video Set Before

You may remember me doing another set for Britt Nicole recently. It was the same type of backdrop, but for that one I used black draping instead of white.

To make the set look festive, I found a bunch of giant silver and red ornaments and hung them from the ceiling using fishing line.

Britt Christmas Video Set- Tree and Ornaments

I also found these fun shiny pop up trees and the silver sparky garland hanging in the back from Target.

I hung a few of the ornaments from a branch in the center of the space to add a bit of quirkiness.

I kept it simple, but I think it turned out good.

Here’s a behind the scenes shot with Britt and her band. It looks super dark, but there was a lot of back lighting that you can’t really see.

And if you’re curious as to what the set looked like on camera and want to get into the Christmas spirit, here’s the finished video they recorded for “Jingle Bell Rock.”

I did end up adding the presents around the trees after I took my pictures. I just wrapped empty boxes with brown kraft paper. Made the space around the trees a little more visually appealing.

What do you think? Planning on showing you guys another Christmas set from another artist next week!

Behind The Scenes of a Video Set {Set Design}

About a month ago, I was asked to create a set at work for one of our artists, Britt Nicole. They were wanting to film several acoustic videos and wanted to create a somewhat professional video set.

The idea was to create something that had an intimate feel. Here’s what the set looked like in the end.

Britt Nicole Acoustic Set Design

I thought it would be fun today to give you a little behind the scenes look of how the whole set came together from beginning to end.

{Sidenote: I apologize in advance, these photos aren’t great. All I had with me was my iPhone.}

I started with some large metal frames. These are the type of frames that photographers use sometimes for backdrops. We just rented them for a few days.

I clamped on some black draping to the frames to create a solid black background.

Next came the lights. We already had several light kits in house from a previous event. I used those and bought some really cool vintage bulbs from Home Depot. It’s hard to tell from these pictures, but the bulbs were awesome. I want to use them in my future house one day.

Britt Nicole Acoustic Set Design

I bought several strands of lights with the bigger white bulbs at Target. I strung several from the ceiling and then also draped some on the black backdrop.

Making progress!

The camera crew that came to film brought in some back lighting that you see in the back. We also rented that cool microphone in the center.

For the final step, I added black linens on the floor so you wouldn’t see the carpet in the shots.

Here’s the after shot again.

These pictures don’t really do the set justice. It looked really good in person and I was really happy with how it turned out.

Here’s one of the videos that was filmed on the set to give you a better idea of how it looked on camera.

And here’s a little fun behind the scenes shot of it being filmed.

So, what do you think? Do you think it ended up looking good on camera?

DIY Fish Scale Art & Pom Pom Set Designs

Happy Monday friends! Hope you had a wonderful weekend! The weather here was absolutely gorgeous and perfect for getting some projects done. I started the process of decorating for fall and hope to have it all finished sometime this week. Stay tuned for pictures.

In the meantime, I wanted to share with you guys some recent sets I did in our video room at work. We have two main walls, a turquoise wall and a ‘purple-ish’ wall. I shared the turquoise set with you guys before with the gallery wall of frames. They asked if we could switch up that wall a bit for a recent video, so here’s what I came up with.

DIY Fish Scale Wall Art Set

I switched up the accessories on the side table. I bought the gold candelabra and red dish from Target. Sidenote: speaking of Target, have you heard about The Shops at Target this fall. They have taken four small boutiques and are carrying some of their collections in Target stores across the country for a limited time. My favorite is the Curiosity Shoppe. But just trust me, if you haven’t been to Target lately, be sure to go check it out!

DIY Fish Scale Art Set Design

I also kept the horse head but added some books that I had at home from my bookshelves.

On the wall, I replaced the gallery wall of frames with some diy fish scale wall art.

DIY Fish Scale Wall Art

I don’t have really have a step by step tutorial on how I made these {failed to take pictures} but Two Thirty-Five Designs has a great tutorial.

I bought the canvases at JoAnns for 40% off. I used gold scrapbook paper and double sided tape to attach the circles to the canvas. You can just trace and cut circles if you prefer, but I also bought a circle puncher to save some time {and save my hands}.

DIY Fish Scale Wall Art 2

Instead of covering the entire canvas with the fish scale look, I decided to leave a 1/2 inch border all the way around. Pretty easy and I love how they turned out!

I also switched up our ‘purple-ish’ wall. Previously it had our pallet wall art. But I wanted it to be a little more girly and fun this time. I used the tissue paper pom poms from the gold themed set I did not too long ago and attached them to the wall in a checkerboard pattern.

Here’s a sideview as well.

Overall though, I kept this set pretty simple. As soon as the videos are posted that were filmed in front of these sets, I’ll be sure to share them with you guys. :)

Happy Monday friends!
