Christmas Wreath & Other Decorations

Sorry this post is up later than usual this morning. Last night was my last night here in my current place and the last night with all my friends before everyone dispersed for Christmas break. I was also doing some last minute packing last night so all in all I was up super late. Totally worth it though!

I know Christmas is only 3 days away, but I have one last Christmas decorating post for you. This time it’s all about my Christmas wreath and other decorations I had around the house.

Christmas Wreath-Door

The theme this year for my Christmas decorating was use what you have. I didn’t really buy anything and made do with things I already owned. With the move, gotta save some money! So, here’s the wreath that I came up with this year.

This is what my Christmas wreath looked like in years past.

Christmas Wreath Before

I removed everything from the old one, and started over with the base.

I had some leftover burlap ribbon from my tree so I weaved some in and around the wreath.

I added some pinecones that I had painted and winterized with glitter and then re-used the red berries from the old wreath.

Finished Christmas Wreath

And that’s basically it. Kept it pretty simple.

Here’s another picture of the wreath on the door.

And here’s a close up with some of the red berries.

For other Christmas decorations, I also added some winterized pinecones, cinnamon sticks and red potpourri berries to the glass bowl on our coffee table {for fall I had filled it with just pinecones}.

Here’s a close up of one of the fun glittery pinecones.

Wintery Pinecones

I have to admit, my Christmas decorations are actually already all down. I took them down yesterday. Waited as long as I could. I’m going out of town this weekend and when I come back on Sunday, I’ll be loading up a UHaul. So I had to have everything packed up and ready by this morning.

A little depressing to have all the decorations down before Christmas, but had to do it.

My blogging may be a little sparse over the next week or so due to moving. But I’ll be back once I’m a little more settled in my new place.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and if you are traveling this weekend, safe travels!

Colton Dixon Christmas Video Set

I showed you the Britt Nicole Christmas video set I worked on last week. Today I thought I would skip WordPress Wednesday once more to show you another Christmas video set I worked on. This time for Colton Dixon.

{Warning: these pictures aren’t great. My camera battery died and all I had was my iPhone.}

This set did double duty. We filmed both a Christmas video and non Christmas acoustic videos.

Colton Dixon Video Set

For this set I used the same black draping that I used for a previous set and the same strands of lights.

I hung a few pendant lights from the ceiling as well.

Colton Dixon Video Set 2

We rented a baby grand piano {which actually is a shell, which I’ll show you a close up of it in a bit} and I added a few battery operated candles on top.

Here’s what it looked like sans Christmas decor.

Colton Dixon Video Set 3

To make it look Christmas-y, I added a few of the Christmas decorations I used for the other Christmas set.

Christmas Video Set 4

Recognize these pop-up trees?

Colton Dixon Christmas Video Set 2

I just plopped them down around the piano.

I also hung the silver garland on the piano.

I put a few of the ‘faux’ packages that I wrapped on the piano as well. Recognize those pinecones on the packages? Yep, used the same ones on my packages this year.

Colton Dixon Video Set 4

I got the pendant lights from World Market. I loved the industrial/distressed finish they had.

The candles also came from World Market. They are made from real wax and the packaging said they gave off a more ‘real’ candle glow. I’m not sure they really did. They still looked a little too orange-y for me. But, with all the back lighting and other lights, on camera they didn’t appear orange which was good.

Colton Dixon Video Set- Candles

I mentioned that the baby grand piano was actually a shell. Basically that means they have gutted the piano and you just put a keyboard in it. So it appears like a baby grand, but it’s a lot lighter without the ‘guts’ for renting. Pretty neat. The piano looked great on camera.

Here’s the finished video with Colton’s version of “Jingle Bells.”

What do you think? Which Christmas set do you prefer?

My set designing at work has come to an end though. Today is actually my last day at my current job. I’ve loved getting the opportunity to stretch my creativity and design abilities with these sets at work. I will miss everyone that I’ve had the opportunity to work with over the last 4+ years and will always cherish my time from this past season. On to a new season and a new adventure in South Carolina!

Guest Post From Lolly Jane:: Pottery Barn Knock-Off Hurricanes

Today you guys are in for a real treat. I have the lovely ladies from Lolly Jane here to share a fun little diy project. I came across their blog recently and loved everything I saw so I had to ask if they would show us one of their projects. Ladies, take it away!

**********************************************************************************

Hi there Megan Brooke Handmade readers! We are so excited to be here today visiting Megan and you guys! We’re thrilled she has asked us to share our Pottery Barn knock-off hurricanes with you. It’s a great gift to give as it can be used year round (more on that in a bit) or perfect to keep on your own mantel too!

But first we want to quickly introduce ourselves. We’re Kristi and Kelli from Lolly Jane, a DIY/Home Improvement blog full of tips and tricks from painting furniture to crafting and even a tasty desserts along the way. We love sharing our tutorials!

Okay now let’s get crafting! We were browsing the Pottery Barn catalog, filled with gorgeous Christmas cheer, and spotted their double-tiered glass hurricanes, priced at $144. Yeow! We instantly knew we could replicate these beauties for a fraction of their price…. well, we did (for $29!) and we just love the result of our PB knock-off glass hurricanes:

These can be used year-round by simply changing out the cranberries for pretty stones or flowers or etc. They sure are pretty for this time of year, though!
To create this project we used the following supplies:
  • 4 glass pillar candle holders: 2 medium, 2 large
  • 2 candles: one short, one tall
  • Bag of firm cranberries
  • 2 pieces of card stock + 1 sheet of tissue paper
  • Craft supplies like scissors, tape, etc.

To create the PB music sheet candles we semi-used a great tut from Can’t Stop Making Things but couldn’t get it to print with her instructions…. luckily, we had double-sided tape handy, which saved the day! Yay! We taped along the edges of the cardstock and pressed the tissue paper onto it and printed. Easy. From there we cut the edges off, {where the tape adhered to the cardstock.}

We squeezed a thin bead of glue along the edge of both candles, placed the tissue paper along it, wrapped the candle, trimmed the edges and heated the paper onto the candle with a blow dryer:

So pretty! Now to assemble the knock-off hurricanes:

Simpy fill 2 of them with pretty Christmas-y items, like pine cones from your tree or fresh, firm cranberries. {We let our little ones help!} Stack the empty pillar onto the filled one, add your music candle, light and enjoy the ambiance of designer holiday decor for less!

Hope you enjoy the tutorial and are inspired to try your hand at creating designer decor for less. If you’re looking for more cute and inexpensive holiday creations, be sure to check out our Christmas decor and goods! Come on over to Lolly Jane to say hi anytime! You can also find us on Facebook HERE and Pinterest HERE. Would love to see you! :)

THANKS again for having us, Megan! xo

Thanks Kristi and Kelli for sharing this fun project with us. And like they said, you can use these year round, not just around the holidays which is great.

Be sure to stop by and check out some of their other fun projects!

I hope everyone had a good weekend. I got a lot of packing done this weekend but managed to squeeze in some Christmas movie watching and gift exchanging too. This is basically my last week in Nashville so trying to squeeze in as much as I can.

Rustic Christmas Tree 2012

Christmas is officially 13 days away. Can you believe it? I feel like this month is flying by!

I showed you our Christmas mantel last week. Thought this week I would show you guys some pictures of our Christmas tree all decorated, since it’s almost Christmas and all.

Our tree matches our mantel theme, very earthy and rustic.

Rustic Christmas Tree

Last year I knew I wanted to change up my Christmas decor. So the day after Christmas I bought up tons of ornaments all marked down. I would say 95% of the ornaments you see I bought last year on December 26.

Here’s a shot of the other side of the tree.

Rustic Christmas Tree- Side View

I knew I wanted to go with a more earthy look. I found the burlap ribbon at a store in downtown Franklin. I actually ran out and didn’t have enough so I did have to go out and buy another spool this year.

Some of the ornaments came from shops in downtown Franklin, but a large majority of them came from Target {I love me some Tar-jay}.

Rustic Christmas Tree-Ornaments

I can’t remember where these little birdhouses came from (I think Target), but I just thought they were fun.

Rustic Christmas Tree- Birdhouse

This glittery pinecone ball came from Target.

Rustic Christmas Tree- Pinecone Bunch

As did this twig snowflake.

Rustic Christmas Tree- Star Ornament

I picked up this little wooden sand dollar ornament as a souvenir from my trip to Charleston this summer.

Rustic Christmas Tree- Charleston Ornament

The brown snowflake tree topper came from Target.

Rustic Christmas Tree- Tree Topper

As did the pinecone ornaments you see at the bottom of the picture.

I used some leftover burlap fabric for the tree skirt (I actually used the fabric in my little basket filled with pumpkins from my fall mantel).

Burlap Tree Skirt

I really love the new look of my tree this year. Reflects more of my taste and style.

I think I might pick up a few more ornaments this year after Christmas though. Maybe some more white ornaments or shinier ornaments…just so it’s not so brown. I think it feels so brown partially because our walls are brown, so maybe in a different place it will feel different.

I also went with a natural look for my Christmas wrapping too…to match of course.

DIY Presents- Gold Ornaments

My mom is an excellent bow maker. I’m talking super fancy bows. No matter how hard I try, I am just not able to produce pretty bows. So instead of attempting to make pretty bows to use with my wrapping {and failing}, I figured I would wrap in my own creative/quirky way that feels more like ‘me.’

I wrapped all my presents in brown Kraft paper that I got at the dollar store (which equals way cheaper than the wrapping paper I’ve bought in the past).

DIY Presents- Ornaments

I bought some little ornaments last year after Christmas thinking I could incorporate them into my wrapping this year. I just tied them to some raffia and tied it all into a bow on the presents. Super simple!

DIY Presents- Pinecones

I bought the little tags you see on the presents from Minted.com and just customized them with my initial.

On a few of the presents I attached these little snowflake wooden stickers instead of using ornaments.

DIY Presents- Snowflakes

Love how both my presents and tree turned out. Glad I decided to switch things up this year.

Rustic Christmas Tree- Full

What about you? Do you keep the same theme every year, or switch it up every now and then? Anyone else as crazy as me and knew what your theme was going to be last year on Dec. 26?

Britt Nicole Christmas Video Set

Taking a break from WordPress Wednesday today and instead showing you something I worked on recently.

A few weeks ago I worked on three different video sets for three different video shoots. One of those was a Christmas set for Britt Nicole.

Britt Nicole Christmas Video Set

I didn’t have a ton of time to prepare beforehand, but I did manage to take a little trip to Tar-jay and scour their Christmas section. And the above is what I came up with.

Here’s what it looked like before. It was basically three large frames that I then draped with white fabric.

Video Set Before

You may remember me doing another set for Britt Nicole recently. It was the same type of backdrop, but for that one I used black draping instead of white.

To make the set look festive, I found a bunch of giant silver and red ornaments and hung them from the ceiling using fishing line.

Britt Christmas Video Set- Tree and Ornaments

I also found these fun shiny pop up trees and the silver sparky garland hanging in the back from Target.

I hung a few of the ornaments from a branch in the center of the space to add a bit of quirkiness.

Britt Christmas Video Set- Ornaments

I kept it simple, but I think it turned out good.

Here’s a behind the scenes shot with Britt and her band. It looks super dark, but there was a lot of back lighting that you can’t really see.

Britt Nicole Christmas Set- Behind the Scenes

And if you’re curious as to what the set looked like on camera and want to get into the Christmas spirit, here’s the finished video they recorded for “Jingle Bell Rock.”

I did end up adding the presents around the trees after I took my pictures. I just wrapped empty boxes with brown kraft paper. Made the space around the trees a little more visually appealing.

What do you think? Planning on showing you guys another Christmas set from another artist next week!
