31 Days to Building Your Dream Home:: Stay One Step Ahead

The design selections for your home are made in a particular order and are strategically planned out in order to continue movement throughout the various building stages.

I broke down the entire process along with each stage of selections here.

We’ve already talked about a few of the stages and some of the selections that have to be made.

Stay One Step Ahead

My advice, stay one step ahead on your research and selections.

The timeline between each selection stage can be a matter of only a few weeks or a it could be a few months. It’s unpredictable.

Luckily {or unluckily} for us, we ran into a few delays during the early stages of our renovation. But, because we were keeping to the original timeline and going ahead and meeting with vendors and our designer, when the time came to sign the dotted line and make the selections final, we were more than ready and prepared.

While the delays were frustrating, the fact that we had plenty of time to research and weigh our options was a good thing. Not to mention, it prevented a lot of stress and headache.

So even though you don’t need to make tile selections just yet {i.e. your builder isn’t asking for them}, go ahead and take the time to visit a few tile shops, start compiling a list of options you like and start pricing things out.

Stay ahead on things that aren’t part of your actual design selections as well like switch plate cover colors, exterior doors, fireplace designs and trim styles.  Start gathering inspiration and make a list of ideas so you can be prepared to discuss with your builder when the time comes.
