31 Days to Building Your Dream Home:: Researching Pays Off

Researching is something I’m not great at. I never know where to start, where to look or how to find things. Luckily, I married someone who is great at researching and will spends hours researching something before purchasing or making a decision.

Even though I’m not good at it, I know how important this is when making decisions as it relates to your home.

Researching Pays Off

When working with a building company, along the way they will advise you to pick out plumbing from a certain supply store, order lighting through a certain retail store or use a certain fabricator or tile shop. You may think you don’t have the option to go anywhere else, but that’s not always the case.

While the reason they make those recommendations a large majority of the time is because they do a lot of volume with these places and can get discounts that will benefit you, that’s not to say you can’t get better pricing and the same discount elsewhere.

It’s important to do your research and shop around, just like you would do with any other major item you were looking to buy.

Visit multiple plumbing showrooms and tile showrooms, for example, and compare prices between them all. Most supply companies offer a generic builder discount to any builder that’s the same across the board. If one tile shop has slightly lower prices than another, with the standard builder discount {say 20%}, you’re looking at an overall lower price point if you shop with them.

It’s also important to do your research and shop around because you might score some amazing deals just by taking the time and reaching out to different places.

Some smaller local companies might be interested in developing a relationship with your builder and might be willing to give you an even greater discount to prove their quality and customer service in the hopes of getting more business in the future.

This is exactly what happened to us. We reached out a local company that was very interested in working with our builder and gave us an amazing deal {significantly lower than we could have gotten at the recommended place}. Had we not taken the time to make some phone calls and visit somewhere else, we would have spent hundreds of dollars more.

Shopping around and doing the necessary research can save you a good chunk of change that you could put into other areas of your home that you might not have been able to.
