When it comes to renovating or building your home, there are a team of people that you will work with to make your dream a reality. From the architect, project manager, interior designer and vendors, you will be communicating with a lot of different people on a weekly, sometimes daily, basis.
With all these different people comes different personalities, styles of working, and communicating.
First piece of advice, before you make your first decision regarding the house, sit down with your entire team and discuss expectations.
Let your project manager explain how the process will work, the various stages along the way, and the timeline for when decisions need to be made. Making timely selections and decisions will prevent hold-ups in the overall building process. You will need to make quick decisions at times, but knowing that they are coming, can help you prepare in advance.
Ask questions about roles, who manages what, and who you need to communicate with on the various aspects of the building process. Who will be the one to confirm budget/costs, who you communicate final selections with, etc. This is one thing we failed to do so along the way we were in the dark about who to go to with various concerns or questions.
From there, let the team know what your expectations are for the whole process. Would you like to have a weekly update on the status of the project? Do you want to be alerted when issues arise? Discussing expectations now will prevent frustrations down the road.
Communication is so vitally important. It’s key in making this a pleasant and smooth process, one you will look back on fondly, instead of a time you wish to forget.
