31 Days to Building Your Dream Home:: Plumbing Fixtures

While you are in the midst of selecting light fixtures and appliances, you’ll also need to select plumbing fixtures.

Plumbing fixtures are probably not something you think about really influencing the design of your home all that much. After all, a faucet is a faucet and a sink is a sink right? But, choosing beautiful fixtures is a great way to incorporate your personal style and also enhance the overall design plan for your home.

If you follow the blog on a regular basis, you may remember me posting 6 tips for selecting plumbing fixtures for your home. This post is a great resource to bookmark when you are going through the actual selection process.

But, if you are having trouble deciding what style fixture or finish to go with, here are some great examples of plumbing fixtures that seamlessly blend into the home’s design yet still make a really beautiful statement in each space.

Plumbing selections include sinks, toilets and tubs in addition to fixtures. It’s important to choose plumbing styles that fit with your home’s overall aesthetic {whether traditional, craftsman, modern, etc.}. The wall mount sink, brass fixtures and unique design details of the toilet add wonderful design details to this bathroom, while also fitting with the bathroom’s overall look and feel.

One of the harder decisions you might face is what finish to go with for your fixtures. There’s many to choose from including brass, nickel, polished chrome and oil rubbed bronze to name a few. It’s important to choose finishes that will blend with the rest of the space while also blending with the rest of the finishes used throughout your home.

Plumbing is a great way to add unexpected elements and a unique touch. Going with the less traditional bowl sink on top of the vanity as well as a unique industrial faucet add lovely character to this bathroom. Yet both work well in this rustic, farmhouse style space.

Shower fixtures are another thing to consider when making plumbing selections. You may not realize it, but there are many styles and forms shower fixtures come in. You can choose to have them mounted to the wall or ceiling, have large heads or small, and can choose from a variety of water controls {shapes and sizes}. I love how the brass shower fixtures in this bathroom pop beautifully against the all white tile and have an industrial/old school look that blends well with the rest of the finishes and features in this bathroom.

You can’t forget about your kitchen. The sink choice and fixtures for this space are also a great way to enhance your kitchen’s overall feel. If you have room in the budget, a gorgeous farmhouse kitchen sink fits well with a variety of design styles and paired with the right faucet fixture, can become a beautiful focal point in the space.

Since plumbing selections are made early on, keep in mind the finish you choose will more than likely affect some of the other finishes in your home {i.e. cabinetry hardware, etc.}. Focus on the big picture look you are trying to achieve and make selections that will fit that style.

Another factor to consider is durability and quality. While a tub or toilet or sink faucet may look pretty, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the most functional or durable. Do your research on materials {i.e. acrylic vs. plastic tubs} and know what will be best for the long run.

    Hi Megan!

Coming a little late to this series but I’m really enjoying it as I catch up. I found your posts through the #write31days hashtag. My husband and I just bought our first home and we are in the early stages of renovating our unfinished basement into an apartment. We were hoping to be further along by now, but the permitting process is taking much longer than we expected. It’s been so nice to read these posts and become excited again amidst the overwhelm! Looking forward to more… (as well as the day when I finally get to choose things like plumbing fixtures!)

How fun Lacy! I’m so glad this series has been helpful! I’ve learned so much thus far and hope to pass along some words of wisdom to others that are or will go through this process. Can’t wait to see how your basement looks when it’s all finished!
