5 Tips to Getting a Good Night’s Sleep

When I was growing up I could fall asleep in a matter of seconds and could sleep through anything. In fact, there was a time when our smoke alarms were going off in our house and I didn’t make a peep. Woke up the next morning and never knew a thing happened.

As I’ve gotten older though, sleep doesn’t come quite as easy. I have to be more intentional about my bedtime routine and do a few things to make sure I get a good night’s sleep.

Getting a good night’s sleep can make a world of difference. My husband can attest. I don’t do well if I don’t sleep well or don’t sleep enough. Let’s just say he’s seen the worst sides of me {aka grumpy mess} when I’m sleepy.

So since getting a good night’s sleep benefits not only my own personal health but those around me, here are a few tips {and things that help me} to get a good night’s sleep.

Go To Bed When Your Spouse Does

This is a recent adjustment to my bedtime routine {seeing as though I didn’t have a bed mate in my single days}. I think going to bed at the same time as your spouse is important, for multiple reasons, but one being {in my experience} it helps the both of you get a better night’s sleep. If your spouse goes to bed earlier and you come in later, there’s a chance you’re going to wake them up when you crawl into bed {and vice versa}. It also helps if one of you snores. ๐Ÿ™‚

Create a Relaxing Space

Your bedroom should be a place you can unwind and relax in after a long day. So it should be a place that feels restful and relaxing. Before you go to bed, try putting away any clothes left on the floor or miscellaneous items on your dressers. A clean and tidy space feels more relaxing and helps you avoid mentally thinking about all the clutter. Also, using a calm and relaxing color palette and comfortable furnishings in your bedroom will help you to feel more relaxed and hopefully get more rest as a result.

Stick To A General Bedtime

In my single days I went to bed at all sorts of different times. Usually around 10:30pm or 11:00pm during the week and usually later on the weekends. I never really had a specific bedtime I stuck to. My husband on the other hand has always stuck to the same general bedtime every night. And since we go to bed at the same time {see tip #1}, I’ve seen how beneficial it is to keep the same general bedtime. My body has gotten used to going to sleep at the same time every night so when it gets close to that time I get sleepy and feel ready for bed. We also stick to the same general bedtime on the weekends which helps us get a good night’s sleep when the weekend is over and it’s time to start the work week.

Turn Off Electronics Before Bed

I’m not always the best at this, but research suggests watching tv or browsing the internet before going to bed can interfere with sleep. You might be able to fall asleep, but you might not be getting a good overall restful sleep throughout the night. I sometimes need something though to get my mind off of my mental to-do list that is constantly running through my brain so one thing I like to do is read before going to bed. That helps me to clear my mind and turn off my brain in order to sleep well.

Invest In A Good Mattress

Doing all the above things won’t help unless you have a good and comfortable mattress. A bad or uncomfortable mattress can really prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep. There’s so many different kinds of mattresses and so many different preferences on the hardness or softness, but spend the time researching and invest in a good mattress that you {and your spouse} loves.

The hubs and I will eventually need to buy new mattresses once we move into our house. Our bedroom being one of the first new ones we will probably buy {although not right away}. The hubs has mentioned several times how much he wants a TEMPUR-pedic mattress. He thinks they are one of the most comfortable mattresses and I’ve heard they can be great for people with back pain.
