At this point he had met my parents, but he hadn’t met anyone else in my family yet. I, being an only child, grew up being close with my extended family and cousins. My cousin’s youngest was having a birthday party in July, so I thought it would be a good time to bring him down to meet the rest of the family.

I also wanted him to meet my grandmother. My grandfather had passed away a little over a year ago and my grandmother’s health had declined ever since. Diagnosed with breast cancer 5 years ago, she had been in remission, but the cancer returned a few months after he passed.  On top of the cancer, she had early signs of Alzheimer’s. I wanted him to get the chance to meet her, and I had a strong urging that it needed to happen sooner rather than later.

We drove down Saturday morning from Nashville and stopped by my other grandmother’s house first. My grandmother instantly took a liking to him and even snapped a few pictures of us {with her disposable camera mind you ;)}.

After eating lunch with her, we drove back down to where my mom’s side of the family lives. My grandmother, not feeling up to the party, was planning to stay home and my mom was staying with her. The birthday party was happening around 3pm that afternoon so we stopped by her house on our way to the party to visit for a bit.

I could tell she wasn’t well and noticed the change in her appearance from the medications she was on. I knew she probably needed to rest, so we didn’t stay long. Just long enough to have a few brief conversations.

My fiance’s name is Aaron and he shares the same name as my grandfather. Prior to meeting him, my grandmother would ask me if we were going to have another Aaron in the family. I would say ‘I don’t know…’ with a smile on my face and she would tell me how good her Aaron was to her. I loved that they shared the same name. I always wanted to have a marriage like my grandparents and I didn’t think it was a coincidence that this man I was with shared not only the same name but some of the same sweet characteristics of my grandfather.

We had fun at the party. We watched a then 4 year old rip through presents and devour cake and ice cream before we made the drive back to Nashville. He liked my family and my family liked him.  As we made the drive back, a drive I had taken many times, I couldn’t help but envision Aaron being at many more birthday parties and family occasions in the future. I loved how well he fit in with the family.

What I didn’t know at the time, was that the next time I made that drive, it would be under very different circumstances.

A week later I got a call at work saying that my grandmother had been hospitalized. No one knew how bad it was, but it didn’t look good. I immediately left work and called to tell Aaron the news. I was planning to go visit him that weekend in Greenville and already had my flights booked. I told him I still wanted to come, but that I needed to see what was going on once I got there.

That trip never happened. Within 24 hours I had cancelled my flights and was sitting in a hospital room crying my eyes out, for a multitude of reasons.

To be continued…
