Our Love Story {Part 4}

If you are new here, I’m re-telling the story of how my fiance and I met. Here’s Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 of our love story.

Our Love Story Graphic

I need to back up the story a bit.

I failed to mention that we had actually met for the first time in December. I was meeting some friends in Charlotte for the Clemson ACC Championship game that year. It was cheaper to fly into Greenville and drive to Charlotte then fly directly into Charlotte.

Clemson ACC Game

In one of my emails to him, I mentioned that I was flying into Greenville and going to the game. He asked if I had time to meet up somewhere and grab coffee before I flew back to Nashville. I knew I couldn’t let the opportunity pass by. So we decided to meet at 11am on that Sunday following the game. I had a flight out of Greenville later that afternoon so I would just drive down early and hang out for a bit before having to go to the airport.

At this point, only my old college roommate {whose sister encouraged both of us to join} and my current roommate knew about him. I made sure both of them knew exactly where we were going and what his name was. Because let’s be real, the internet can be creepy. Just in case he turned out to be a serial killer, I needed a few people to know to call the police if I ended up being a missing person.

Driving down to Greenville that Sunday I was a complete bundle of nerves. What if this ‘meeting’ ended up being super awkward. What if I was being Catfished {a.k.a. he ended up being a 60 year old man who hoarded and was balding}. I kept having to give myself pep talks. Everything would be ok. This isn’t a life or death situation, it’s just coffee. And it’s only for a few hours.

In life, sometimes you have to take risks. Risks can be scary, but more often than not, they are completely worth it in the end.

Taking Risks{Source}

This was a risk for me.

I don’t like being out of my comfort zone and this was COMPLETELY out of my comfort zone.

As I pulled into the parking spot at the coffee shop downtown, I literally felt like I was going to throw up. I had to force myself out of the car and walk in.

For fear of not recognizing him right away, I walked in and went straight to the restroom and did a little scoping as I walked through {I also needed a few minutes to compose myself and wipe the sweat off my face that at this point was starting to bead}.

I didn’t see him when I came out, so I went ahead and went up to the counter to order something.

He saw me at the counter and walked up and met me. I remember thinking that his online pictures didn’t do him justice. He was way more handsome than those pictures. I wondered what he was thinking. Did he think I looked like my one and only picture I had posted?

We found a spot to sit and chatted for a bit. We talked about work, some of our friends, and he told me a little bit more about his recent trip to Kenya. The conversation wasn’t awkward at all. It was refreshing.

After a few minutes, he asked if I would want to walk downtown for a bit. I hadn’t been back to Greenville in several years and a lot of things in downtown had changed.

As we walked, he pointed out new buildings, new restaurants and all the fun things that happened downtown.

The conversation was easy. He made me feel comfortable. I remember thinking, this is how it was supposed to be. This was how a good ‘first date’ should be.

I could tell he was kind, generous and had a good heart. He was also very attentive, making sure I wasn’t too cold and checking his watch to make sure he got me back in time to drive to the airport and make my flight.

As we made our way back to my car, he gave me his blueberry muffin for the road and we said goodbye. We didn’t really say anything about the future. Just left it as is. I didn’t know what was going to happen next, but he seemed like a great guy and I had fun.

I wondered how I would tell my friends and family about this and how we met online. But, in the meantime, I just figured I would wait and see how it all played out.

To be continued…
