I took a little break from WordPress Wednesday last week, but I’m back this week with another installment.
We’ve already talked about the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org as well as how to secure your domain name. Today, I was going to explain a little bit about hosting.
If you have decided to go with WordPress.org, you have to host your own blog. Hosting basically means you have your own server where all your online files are stored (code, images, buttons, etc.). If you use Blogger, your files are stored on their server. Same with WordPress.com.
There are several companies that you can pay for web hosting services. I personally use HostGator. I went with the basic Hatchling plan for $3.95/month for 3 years. If you have a ton of traffic, you might want to go with a more comprehensive package just to avoid your server from crashing due to traffic volume.
So far I’ve had a great experience and they have great customer service. When I first switched I had a few questions/issues and I was able to live chat with someone immediately and they were able to walk me through the problem.
There are other companies such as dreamhost or bluehost that offer hosting services as well.
Once you’ve purchased your web hosting services, you will get an email with 2 name servers.
Go to the site where you bought your domain name. Through Name.com you would click the link on the right that says Edit Nameservers and copy the two codes from your email into the proper spaces.
And that’s it! You now have officially secured hosting for your blog/website.
Next we’ll get into the fun stuff, design!
So tell me, has WordPress Wednesday been helpful to you so far? I promise, the more fun stuff is coming!
