DIY Spring Wreath Tutorial

It’s that time of the year. Time to clean out the old and bring in the new. Time to plant some flowers or maybe even a garden. And because it’s Spring, it’s also a chance to spruce up your front door! Our poor door was looking like it could use a ‘Spring’ touch. So this past weekend, I made a little DIY Spring wreath.

Photobucket
Pin It
This is the wreath I used last Spring {but with a more colorful ribbon}.

Photobucket

Can you tell it’s seen better days? The boxwood twigs were starting to fall out {see arrow for example}. Last year I just wanted something simple, and this was perfect for that. But this year, I thought it would be fun to do something a little more colorful.

Photobucket

I love square wreaths, so instead of buying a new wreath base, I just took out all the boxwood twigs from the old one and used the base for this wreath.

Photobucket

Here are all the supplies you’ll need::

-Square wreath base
- Ribbon {of your choice}
- Faux Baby’s Breath {in this case, purple and green}

Photobucket

I wanted it to have a full/clumpy look. Typically when you buy the filler stuff at a craft store, you angle them into the wreath and they lay against the wreath. But since I wanted the baby’s breath to be front and center, I had to cut them down quite a bit.

Photobucket

Then I just started sticking the little pieces into the wreath, alternating between purple and green.

Photobucket

Here’s an ‘almost done’ shot. Now, forewarning, I had only planned on this little project taking a few hours at max. But, since I was cutting them down into such small pieces, it took a lot longer than I planned. It probably took me a good 3-4 hours total. :/ Some of you may be faster than me, but if you wish to duplicate, be sure to set enough time aside!

I also added some hot glue here and there to make sure some of the baby’s breath stayed in place.

Photobucket

Here’s the finished product again.

Photobucket

For the ribbon, I wanted something with a print or pattern, but I also wanted it to match the wreath itself. I knew our door was blue, so I also didn’t want to do something that would clash with that. I found this fun purple and white patterned ribbon and it added just the perfect touch.

Photobucket

I strung the ribbon through a few of the wires on the back of the wreath and then just tied a bow at the top for it to rest on the wreath hanger.

Photobucket

Now, doesn’t our door look so much more ready for ‘Spring?’

Have you added a Spring wreath to your door yet?

I mentioned yesterday about switching over to WordPress soon. What I failed to mention was that WordPress no longer supports Google Friend Connect. :( So, all your beautiful faces over there on the left, will soon disappear.

I don’t want to lose you! So, before that happens, if you are currently following using Google Friend Connect, have no fear, there are other ways to follow. You can follow me on Twitter & Facebook, add my blog address {www.meganbrookehandmadeblog.com} to your Google Reader or you can follow along by email by entering your email address in the space provided below ‘Follow By Email’ on the left hand side of the blog.

I’m also hoping to install Linky Followers to the new blog so you can follow along that way if you prefer.

It means so much to me that you would take the time to read this little blog. I hope you continue to visit and always leave inspired!

Have You Been To Kirkland’s Lately?

When I was trying to decide what direction to take for the set design at work a few weeks ago, I did a little perusing at a few stores to get some ideas.

Have any of you been to Kirkland’s lately? In the past, I would occasionally find a few things I liked there, but typically a lot of their stuff really wasn’t my style. That is, until now.

I decided to stop in there just to see if they had any bird cages or anything along those lines I could hang. I didn’t find anything for the set, but I did find a ton of other stuff I wanted to buy for myself! I went back there another time to snap a few pictures.

Let’s take a look at some of the goodies, shall we?

Photobucket

Super cute ceramic stools.

Photobucket

Wooden lanterns.

Photobucket

They had lots of bird ‘themed’ decor items like these ceramic birds.

Photobucket

And this little birdcage. This would be perfect for a bookshelf.

Photobucket

I actually bought this fan for myself. I love the look of vintage fans and this one,
even though it’s not real, fit more with my style and the decorations I already have. I’m hoping to incorporate it into our new built in bookshelves in our living room.

Photobucket

How cute is this skeleton key frame? They also had some frames with
some silhouettes that were super cute!

Photobucket

If you aren’t able to find a real antique camera or typewriter, these ‘faux’ ones would be perfect.

Their new line of stuff is very on par with the current trends. Lots of vintage & natural inspired items and also some chic pieces.

I highly recommend you take a trip there if you have one in your area. Lots and lots of super cute stuff!

And remember I said last week I had some exciting news? I have decided to take the plunge and switch over to WordPress! I have loved blogging over these last few months and it’s something I definitely want to continue doing. I’ve heard so many good things about WordPress when it comes to growing your blog, all the great plugins and the fact that you actually own your site.

I have no idea where this little blog will take me in the future, but I definitely want to go ahead and take that next step.

And, since I’m switching over, I thought now would be a good time to also revamp my blog design. Here’s a little sneak peak of my new header.

Photobucket

I’m so excited to see the finished product!

While the switch is being made, the blog will be down for a bit. I’ll give you guys a heads up to let you know when that will be.

Hope everyone has a fabulous Monday!

P.S. Kirkland’s has no idea who I am. I just really liked what I saw and wanted to share :)

Bird Cage Set Design

A few weeks ago I got to do another set design for work. This time it was for Kari Jobe.

Photobucket
We have a monthly devotion at work, and Kari was asked to come in and do our March devotion. We didn’t feel the need to go overboard with a set, but wanted to add a few elements to the stage. A lot of Kari’s merch pieces she sells on the road have birds on it, so we went with a bird cage theme.

Bird Cage Set Design

Here’s a shot of the full stage {with the horrendous fluorescent lights on}. I’ll give you a breakdown of each of the elements.

Bird Cage Set design with hanging bird cages and frames

I hung a few bird cages on each side of the stage from the ceiling with jute string. I filled each cage with a few battery operated votives. When the stage lights are on and the overhead lights are turned down, the votives give off a good glow/vibe.

Photobucket

I also hung a few frames on each side on the back wall. The back wall is basically carpet squares. I don’t understand the science, but basically it helps with the overall sound in the room. I just used tiny nails and and hammered them through the carpet and barely into the wall behind it for the frames to hang from. These are the same frames I used in a set design for her before and also the ones I used for the Britt Nicole video shoot recently.

Photobucket
Curious what the thing hanging in the middle is?

Photobucket

It’s actually a wire basket I got from Hobby Lobby that I turned upside down. I have seen a lot of cage lighting. When I saw these in Hobby Lobby, I envisioned turning these upside down and putting one of the battery operated votives hanging from the inside to make it appear like a light fixture.

I couldn’t get the candle to stay that way, so I ended up putting one on top.

Photobucket

This bird cage was sort of the inspiration for the whole set. I loved the rusty look and wanted to make the rest of the elements tie into it.

Photobucket

Here’s the close up of one of the hanging bird cages again. I tweaked these a bit to make them tie into the whole set.

Photobucket

Here’s what the bird cages actually looked like before.

Photobucket

I spray painted them with heirloom white spray paint.

Photobucket

After they were spray painted they felt a little plain. And since I wanted them to look like the bird cage I bought from Hobby Lobby, I thought I would distress them a bit.

Photobucket

Here’s a side by side shot. The finished product is on the right and the bought bird cage is on the left. Pretty close, right?

Dry Brush Distressing Technique

Since I wanted them to look rusty, I knew I couldn’t just sand them down. The silver metal was underneath and that’s not the coloring I wanted to show through.

So I bought a little sample of brown paint.

Photobucket

And distressed them using a dry brush technique. You basically just dip your brush in paint and wipe off the excess and then lightly go over the spots you want to appear ‘distressed.’

Photobucket

What’s great about doing it this way is there really is no way to mess it up. I just sort of brushed here and there until I got it looking the way I wanted.

Bird Cage Set Design

I think the finished product definitely had a rusty look to it. Which was my goal!

I’m hoping to be able to re-use some of the cages in some other sets for future in house video shoots so hopefully they’ll go to good use again soon.

On a side note, I have to admit that I caved and read the first Hunger Games book and am going to see the movie tonight. I resisted for a while, mainly because I don’t really get into the sci-fi/fantasy type books and movies. I never got into Harry Potter or Twilight and figured the Hunger Games would be along those lines. But, after a big group from work decided to go see the movie, and after some convincing, I just decided, what the heck, why not see what the fuss is all about.I finished reading the book on Wednesday night. I have to say the story is good. I’m not necessarily obsessed like a lot of people are, but I can see how it can suck you in. I’m interested to see how the movie is and to see if the book is better than the movie.

Are any of you into The Hunger Games or seeing the movie this weekend too?

Wednesday Inspiration:: Branches

Well friends, I’m back and for the most part, in the swing of things. Did you miss me?

I’m officially all moved in to my new place and getting unpacked and settled. Now the fun part starts, decorating :)  I’m hoping to start working on small projects for my room and plan to show you guys the progress along the way.

But, to get back into the swing of things here on the blog, I’m back with a Wednesday inspiration post.

Photobucket
Have you ever thought of a tree branch as art or as something that can be functional? Until recently, I hadn’t ever thought of using them in decorating/design. But I’ve come across some amazing images on Pinterest lately incorporating branches in home design.

Here are just a few::

**P.S. Please ‘Pin’ from the original source.

Simplistic wall art.

A way to hang clothes.

{Source Unknown}

Aren’t the little boy clothes so cute? I’m sure heavier clothes wouldn’t work. But this would be adorable in a nursery.

Another use as wall art. But adding some fun paper garland.

As curtain rods.

{Source}

I would love to try this in my room.

Another functional use for hanging items. This time, in a kitchen.

Branches add such an unexpected touch in each of these images but yet feel natural & simplistic. Wouldn’t you agree?

Have you ever used tree branches in your home when decorating?
